Responding to the large depth of the site this townhouse development utilises the full potential of the land with a double storey dwelling at the front of the site and a large single storey at the rear. Each house has been designed to maximise natural light with main living spaces oriented north. Passive shading has been integrated into the architecture to maintain thermal comfort whilst retaining maximum light. The material palette has been chosen in response to both site context and environmental considerations.

This project comprises a demolition of the rear part of the house whilst maintaining the Victorian-era front of the house. The existing rear section of the house is quite dark so the new 2-storey addition has been re-orientated to maximise light and solar gain. The re-orientation results in a north-facing rear courtyard which extends from the new living and kitchen areas. A visual connection has been created to connect the front of the house with the rear courtyard so each space has a view to the outside.
